What does Bujairami Rockland smell like?
The name Bujairami Rockland and the first heart note on its list point the same way. Rock rose is the common name of cistus, a shrub of dry Mediterranean hillsides whose sticky leaves yield labdanum. As a note it is resinous, warm and slightly leathery, with a herbal, sun-baked side. It is not a rose and does not smell like one.
Around it the list assembles an aromatic bouquet. Bergamot is the bitter-fresh citrus; neroli, distilled from bitter orange blossom, is green, clean and lightly honeyed; black pepper is dry and sharp. In the heart, lavender and clary sage are the two herbs, one camphorous and floral, the other softer and tea-like. Violet adds a powdery, sweet-woody note that softens the herbs.
Dark cocoa leads the base, a bitter, dusty chocolate note with no sugar implied. Patchouli has a cocoa-like facet of its own, so the two reinforce each other. Amber supplies warmth, and vetiver, a root, is dry, earthy and a little smoky. The lower third is therefore dark and dry, in contrast to the bright top.

Rockland and its closest neighbours
Bergamot at the top, patchouli and amber lower down: those are the three notes Bujairami Mafia Boss has in common with Bujairami Rockland. Mafia Boss is otherwise a list of spices, tobacco, cedar, leather and agarwood. Rockland contains no tobacco, leather or oud-type wood. It answers with herbs and flowers, rock rose first, and with dark cocoa and vetiver in the base.
Bujairami Rockland and Bujairami Shinko share a beginning and an end, bergamot and amber. Shinko has three more notes, jasmine, spices and musk, and is an eau de parfum. Rockland is an extrait with eleven notes, and nearly all of its character on paper comes from things Shinko lacks: rock rose, lavender, clary sage, violet, dark cocoa, patchouli and vetiver.
Bujairami 2000 is the nearest of the three in structure. It too has bergamot and black pepper on top, lavender in the heart and amber in the base, and it lists violet leaf where Bujairami Rockland lists violet. The gap is in the base and the resin: 2000 ends on musk and cedar, Rockland on dark cocoa, patchouli and vetiver, with rock rose and neroli besides.
