Bujairami Overdrive opens with an unusual quartet. Neroli is the oil of the bitter orange blossom, floral, green and faintly honeyed. Black pepper is dry and sparkling, and cardamom adds a cool, lemony spice. Carrot seeds are the odd one: the oil is earthy, woody and slightly sweet, with a dusty, rooty character that has more to do with orris than with the vegetable. Together they make a spiced, aromatic start with a floral thread through it.
The heart is where the powdery side begins. Iris, grown for its dried rhizome, smells of cold cream, suede and lipstick, a soft and slightly rooty powder. Violet adds a related sweetness, a green, sugary petal. Geranium is minty-rose and green, a herbal floral that tends to cool a blend. Mate, the leaves of the South American tea plant, brings a dry, tea-like, smoky green. Four materials, all of them on the dry or powdery side of floral.
