Five notes without a top, heart or base leave little to arrange, so the materials can be taken in turn. Lavender is aromatic and herbal, clean and a little camphorous, and it is a classic partner for woods. Cedar is dry, pencil-like and smooth, the backbone of countless woody compositions. These two share a tidy, tailored quality, with nothing sweet in either.
Blackcurrant and jasmine give the list its curves. Blackcurrant is a tart, green, slightly musky berry note, and it is one of the few fruit notes that works well beside woods and herbs. Jasmine is sweet, white and heady, and a touch animalic, which makes the herbs and cedar look a little rounder. It is the only white flower named.
Ambergris is the odd, interesting entry. Real ambergris is a waxy substance formed in the digestive system of sperm whales and found washed up on beaches, and aged pieces smell marine, salty, sweetly earthy and slightly musky. Modern perfumes almost always use synthetic materials or accords that evoke it, and the listing does not say which is meant here. Whatever the source, it brings a skin-warm, mineral note that helps the others blend. The guide has not smelled the scent and can only describe what the five notes usually do together.
