Five of the eight notes in Bujairami Montana are base notes, and that proportion is the story. Oud is resinous heartwood, dark, leathery and slightly animal. Tobacco here means the cured leaf: dry, hay-sweet, a little honeyed. Vetiver is an earthy, smoky root. Oakmoss, a lichen that grows on oak bark, smells damp and inky, like a forest floor. Sandalwood is the one soft member of the group, creamy and smooth.
Against that floor the heart is a surprise. Lily-of-the-valley is a green, watery, clean white flower; its scent cannot be extracted from the blossoms, so perfumers always rebuild it from other materials. On paper, one fresh flower between spice and dark wood is like a window in a panelled room.
Saffron and black pepper sit on top. Saffron smells leathery and bitter-sweet, with something of dry hay and iodine, and it is a frequent partner of oud. Black pepper is sharper and drier than the pink kind, a clean, woody heat. Neither is sweet. In fact nothing on the list is: no vanilla, no amber, no fruit.

Sandalwood is the single note Bujairami Montana shares with Bujairami Executor. Otherwise the lists run in opposite directions: Executor has pear, bergamot, orange blossom, jasmine, vanilla and musk, a bright floral frame, while Montana has saffron, pepper, oud, tobacco and oakmoss.
