Bujairami The Sheikh

Bujairami The Sheikh is a sweet take on the rose and oud theme, sold by the brand as an eau de parfum for him and for her. Saffron and bergamot open the list, oud and Bulgarian rose are the heart, and sugar cane, tonka bean, amber, white musk and oakmoss make the base.

Notes in The Sheikh

Notes as the shop lists them in the product description.

What does Bujairami The Sheikh smell like?

Saffron is the first note of Bujairami The Sheikh. The spice smells leathery, dry and faintly medicinal, with a honeyed warmth underneath, and it is the customary way into an oud perfume. Bergamot beside it is a bitter-fresh citrus that gives the opening a moment of brightness before the darker notes.

The heart is one of the oldest pairings in Middle Eastern perfumery: oud and rose. Oud is agarwood, wood that has turned dark and resinous, with a smell that is woody, animalic and a little medicinal. Bulgarian rose is damask rose from Bulgaria, full and honeyed with a spicy, lemony lift. The rose sweetens and rounds the oud; the oud gives the rose weight.

What makes this list its own is the base. Sugar cane is an unusual note, a green, raw kind of sweetness that suggests cane juice more than refined sugar; how it is rendered here the listing does not say. Tonka bean adds almond, hay and vanilla tones. Amber is warm and resinous, white musk clean and soft. Oakmoss, the lichen behind classic chypre perfumes, is damp, earthy and slightly bitter, and it is the one base note that pulls against the sugar. Two sweet notes under a rose-oud heart explain the two families this guide gives it, oriental and gourmand.

Is The Sheikh for you?

Bujairami The Sheikh is tagged for him and for her and stood at number 34 in the brand's own best-seller order when this guide read it. It is an eau de parfum; the listing gives no size. Oriental and gourmand are the families this guide derives from the notes, on its own account. The list is a short classical pyramid, nine notes, in which the top and heart follow the standard rose-oud pattern and the base departs from it.

What kind of scent is Bujairami The Sheikh?

Judged by its notes alone, The Sheikh is a soft and flowery floral scent.

On paper it is built around bergamot, saffron and oud.

Closest within Bujairami, by notes: Bujairami G Oud, which shares saffron and oud.

Also near: Bujairami Vanilla Storm.

This is the guide's own wording of the family and notes, not a test.

Bujairami The Sheikh compared with related scents

Bujairami Sacred Order

Five notes of Bujairami The Sheikh are also in Bujairami Sacred Order: saffron, rose, oud, tonka bean and amber. Sacred Order places berries on top and leather in the heart, so it reads fruitier at first and drier in the middle. The Sheikh has bergamot instead of berries and no leather; its extra notes are sugar cane, white musk and oakmoss. Sacred Order is the extrait here.

Bujairami Breathless

The Sheikh and Breathless meet at saffron, oud, rose and amber. They part at bergamot, sugar cane, tonka bean and musk (this scent) and incense (Breathless). By the label, Breathless is an extrait de parfum and The Sheikh an eau de parfum.

Bujairami Powerful Lady

Bujairami Powerful Lady is the one of the three without oud. It shares saffron, bergamot, rose, amber and musk with Bujairami The Sheikh, and adds citrus fruits, jasmine and patchouli. The Sheikh has oud next to the rose and a sweeter base, with sugar cane and tonka bean, plus oakmoss where Powerful Lady has patchouli. Both are listed as eau de parfum.
