The top holds eight notes, and six of them are spices. Black pepper is dry and biting; cardamom is cool, resinous and faintly citrusy; clove is warm, sweet and medicinal; cinnamon is sweet and warm; star anise carries a liquorice sweetness; ginger is zesty and warm. Bergamot is the only citrus, and watery notes, a generic label for clean, aquatic freshness, sit among them like a splash. The opening is spicy first, with the citrus as a bright edge.
The heart turns sweet and smoky. Dark chocolate smells bitter, cocoa-like and a little roasted. Bourbon vanilla is creamy and dark. Incense is dry resin smoke, and amber is a warm, powdery accord of resins. Chocolate, vanilla and amber make a heart that is plainly gourmand, and the incense keeps it from reading as a dessert.
Four notes close the list. Leather in perfume is a smoky, suede-like or birch-tar material, depending on how it is built. Oud is the dark resinous wood of agarwood, smoky and balsamic.
