The first minute is bright and powdery. Heliotrope has an almond and cherry-like softness that reads as powder, neroli is the distilled oil of bitter orange blossom, and bergamot adds a sharp, rind-bitter freshness that keeps the flower from sitting too heavy.
The heart is the most unusual part of the list. Iris is the rhizome of the orris plant, known for a cool, violet-like powderiness, and it is costly to produce. Galbanum is a green, resinous material with a sharp, leafy edge, and orange blossom returns a soft, honeyed floralness. Together they make the middle cooler and greener than the sweet close.
The base is warm and close. Tonka bean gives a dry, hay-like sweetness with a coumarin edge, bourbon vanilla adds a rounder and creamier sweetness, and patchouli brings an earthy, dark wood under both. The base is what holds the lighter top and heart together.
